White Teeth and Friends

That is what I will be doing this weekend---getting my teeth whitened and hanging out with my good friends--I am very very excited! I am going to Columbus to have one of my bridesmaid whiten my teeth for me professionally---don't worry she is a dentist :) Another one of our close friends is flying in from Chicago, she is a bride to be also and is getting her teeth whitened too. We are planning on seeing Made of Honor on Friday and having a fun filled weekend, with I'm sure a lot of wedding talk. Are any of you guys "using" your friends to help take care of wedding related expenses free of cost/minimal cost?

Honestly--I am so excited to get away for the weekend and not have to worry about invitations/guest list/ favors--and a million other wedding related items! My calendar is booked solid until the end of July--every weekend there is one thing or another, and it isn't all wedding related! Work is crazy and with all the other weddings we have this summer, I'm starting to wonder if I have bitten off more than I can chew?

The one thing that keeps me constantly grounded is my wonderful FI--he has made my crazy DIY/To -do list into an organized list sorted by deadlines and necessity, just looking at it helps keep me calm. Also the bridesmaid dresses order went in this week--we did decide on the Melissa sweet:

The bridesmaids are wearing it in dark smoke and my MOH's are wearing it in Crimson! I think it will look great, and I am very excited to see them in person, just have to wait up to 17 weeks!

So that's a brief update on where I am right now--I am sorry things have been so busy lately, but I promise when I return on Monday I will go into mass updating mode we're getting closer to the 4 month mark, where things will be in high gear! I can't wait :)

Feather Our Nest

I know it's been a while since I've posted, but Mr. Georgetown and I just closed on our first house together on Monday. Our purchase was even featured on a local Brooklyn blog today! We can't be more excited...or over whelmed. The whole home buying process has me really questioning the need for the items we registered for so I started doing a little research on registry alternatives.

For those of you who haven't made the biggest purchase of your life yet, here is a neat alternative to more traditional department store registries. It's called Feather Our Nest. The idea is that your guests give you money for a downpayment for your first home together, instead of towels, sheets or the china you'll never use. When your guests contribute, they even get a gift card so they'll have something to "physically" give to you on your wedding day. It costs $300 per couple to start your registry, but it's fully refundable when you close on your new home!

Pink Week Tribute

One of the many wedding blogs I have in my reader is, of course, Elizabeth Anne Designs. All this week over there has been "Pink Week" so if this is your wedding color it's a must read.

Personally I'm not big on pink at weddings but if you have to go pink I think you should TOTALLY embrace it. Go all out!

So since today is Friday I'd like to post the below dress I saw today on Nordstrom.com in honor of a very fun and inspiring Pink Week.

It's a Kay Unger with pleated ruching, an obi style tie at the waist, and it is made out of multiple tones of iridescent silk taffeta. I officially declare it the most perfect pink bridesmaid dress in the world.

Yummy Yummy Cake

So I haven't told you guys yet what i decided to do for the cake, FI and I went to a couple of cake tastings (FI favorite part :) )---but there was one place that stood out by FAR and that was Cakes by Carolyn . We met her at her lovely house where we had a tasting of some of the best cakes I have ever tasted! Although we sampled a variety of flavors and frosting-- FI and I decided we wanted a couple layers of coconut and sticking with our Spanish theme, we are going to have a layer of Dulce De leche--along with a vanilla and raspberry cream layer. Carolyn obviously showed her 30+ years of experience with her vast knowledge of everything wedding related. After seeing the styles of cakes she had and getting to know her, we knew that was our obvious choice. I have a strong belief that I want to like all of my vendors. I know that they are there for there talent, and that is obviously important, but I am a friendly open person and I really like getting to know my vendors, and being able to talk with them. I have been incredibly lucky so far to find vendors that are not only incredibly talented but that are also personable and friendly! Carolyn is designing our cake for us, based on designs I showed her, but here are a couple of cakes she has created in the past :

If you havn't found your cake person yet, I highly reccomend meeting with Carolyn!

Holly Slayton of Artikal

This evening the ever talented Marie Labbancz posted the most beautiful images on her blog. She was photographing the bridal headwear of Holly Slayton of Artikal. I hadn't heard of Artikal before but Holly's work is beautiful and quite reasonably priced compared to some other milliners I've seen. You can pick up some of the fascinators for only $50.

Marie Labbancz has some more of these great images on her blog so be sure to check them out...she'll be posting more in the weeks to come!

The Most Beautiful Wedding Cake in America?

Some of you may remember when Bride's magazine featured 50 wedding cakes from bakers across the U.S. and we got to vote on our favorite (you can see 25 of the entries here on their website.)
Well America has voted (heehee) and decided that Something Sweet by Michelle in Worcester, MA. has won.

Michelle says she her goal was to make the cake look as feminine as a hand-painted silk kimono. You be the judge:

I think it's interesting that despite all the new and different designs, shapes, and colors out there today, America still goes for the classic/traditional shapes and colors. Those flowers are absolutely amazing though!
Do you agree with America's decision? Would you want this cake for your wedding ($30 a slice and serves 200)?

Monachetti - All I can say is WOW!

You know, after a 2 yr engagement and 9 months of blogging about DC area weddings and vendors it's not often that I come across something that blows me away anymore. Well, thanks to Laura and her blog I have been incredibly impressed with the talent of Mike at Monachetti.

When we began planning, Fiance and I briefly considered and then disregarded the idea of a videographer for our wedding. Why? Well for one thing videography can cost up to $10,000 (yes!) in the D.C. area and honestly I wasn't all that impressed. The cheaper vendors were cheesy and even the work of the more expensive videographers seemed very contrived to me. It was all kind of overly dramatic, slow motion shots that just didn't fit me or what I wanted my wedding to be.

I briefly flirted with the idea of 8mm films but there weren't many vendors in the area offering this service (if you are interested check out In Films - packages starting at $2,000 and Layer Cake Films- packages starting at $2,300) . And with so many other things to pay for I just couldn't convince Fiance that this was a necessity.

I can honestly say now, though, that if I could chose anyone to film our wedding it would be Monachetti. Just watch these two sample clips and tell me you aren't totally IN LOVE.

The Wedding of Amy and Casey

The Wedding of Shannon and Matt

Mike is really kind, and his prices are consistent with quality DC area videography (don't worry, he's no where near $10,000!). He's also willing to negotiate with price.

What appeals to me most is that his films look like a beautiful documentary of your day and not like the "Hollywood production" of your day. Nothing contrived here. He also has great taste in picking really unique music that creates the right vibe for your video.

Be sure to check out all the clips on his site under "video". The two I featured above are black and white, which I happen to prefer, but if you want color he has done plenty. Of the color films, I liked "Sarah and Stephen" because the bride has beautiful red hair and the ending was so happy it made me smile.

I don't know why I hadn't heard of Monachetti before (i haven't seen him on/in the knot boards, dcknottiereview, weddingwire, Washingtonian Weddings, blogs, or the usual wedding magazines) but this Gem is a secret no longer!

Bush Bridesmaid Details Revealed

According to the Washington Post (via Vogue Magazine) Jenna Bush's maid of honor (her sis Barbara) and her 14 attendants (not bridesmaids...a "house party") will be wearing Lela Rose dresses for her wedding on May 10th in Texas.

According to Women's Wear Daily, maid of honor Barbara will wear a long "moonstone" colored dress which "matches the color of her eyes."

While the 14 other attendants will wear 7 different styles of knee length dresses made from crinkle silk chiffon backed with cotton voile and inspired by the wildflowers of Texas. The dresses will have handmade rosettes and the colors will embrace the cool color spectrum and range from mauve, to teal, to "bluebonnet," the state flower. And interestingly NONE ARE STRAPLESS. Hallelujah the designers are finally listening!

And just in case you are wondering what Jenna herself will be wearing...she's decided on an organza Oscar de la Renta gown with embroidery, matte beading, and a small train.

200 people have been invited to attend so if you feel like you just can't keep your guest list smaller then 200 and you're forking out major money because of it keep that in mind. If the President can do it...you probably can to.

What Would You Do?

Fiance and I met with our photographer this last weekend and we have an interesting decision to make and we're kind of torn so I thought I'd open it up to everyone to see what y'all think.

The Situation: My photography package includes an Engagement Photo Shoot, but since we've been engaged for two years we already did engagement photos and don't need any more. We asked our photographer about other options either in cost or in kind.

The Choices:

1) Have a "day after" shoot in Charlottesville (where we are getting married)
Pros: It will literally be the day after the wedding, we will already have all our stuff there, and it should be pretty easy to go around and take photos.
Cons: Fiance and I really don't have any major connections to Charlottesville...we didn't go to school there and we aren't from there originally. So while a photo in front of the Rotunda will be picturesque, it doesn't have the same meaning for us as it does for other couples. Does this matter? We also might have to miss out on the last moments with our family and friends before they have to head back to their home states.

2) Have a "day after" shoot in the D.C. area (where we live)
Pros: We'll get to spend the day after with our friends and family and pictures around D.C. have more meaning for us since we live here and have a lot of good memories from here
Cons: It'll be after the wedding but possibly a few weeks after...which means longer to get photos back. Would it be weird to have it so far after? We'll have to deal with the hassle and cost of getting "permits" to take photos at any of the monuments. Might have to start shooting as early as 8:00 a.m. to avoid the summer crowds and horrible heat.

3) $125 Credit towards an album
Pros: An album credit is what we would prefer most since really how many pics of yourself do you need? I feel like we'll have plenty from our earlier engagement shoot and from the wedding pics so I'm not sure we need "day after" pics. Albums usually cost around $1,000 for the largest kind.
Cons: What's $125 when you're already spending $1,000? It's barely a drop in the bucket. I feel like taking one of the day after shoots is a much more "valuable" credit then $125.

4) Any other suggestions/options?
Let me know in the comments section if you think there is a better option. As an aside I'm not really a big fan of "boudoir photos" or "trash the dress" (maybe I'll blog about this some other time). I've considered doing a traditional bridal shoot before the wedding (like a true southern girl) but not sure how I feel about it...once again how many pictures of myself do I need lying around?

More Wine Please...

We are reaching our 5 month mark---It seems like most of the "Big" decisions have been dealt with---Now We are left with the hundreds of small decisions...the many DIY projects ( our gocco came yesterday!) and realizing how much is involved with planning a wedding!
I'm sorry if I sound drained , but btw weddings/family/moving/Work/life FI and I have something almost every single weekend until our wedding, just looking at our calendar is enough for me to want to crawl into a cave and hide for the next 5 months :)

However, FI pulled me out of that stupor this morning, when he announced that we had a wine tasting next Friday. My immediate response was "we don't have time" at which he informed me that it was wedding related! FI had found a place for us to taste wine for our wedding bar! Ahh alcohol, how could I have forgotten you! Although FI and I are big fans of two buck chuck, we knew we wanted something a "tad" more classy for the wedding. Since a "free" champagne toast comes with our catering costs, we just have to focus on the wine/liquor/ and beer. Liquor and Beer are pretty easy, we have a good calculator of how much we need, erring on the side of more than less ( better be safe than sorry!) but when it came to wine FI and I weren't sure exactly what we wanted. Now we have an apt for Friday at
The Curious Grape in Shirlington! Living very close to shirlington ( we are going there for dinner tonight!) I have seen this store before, but I must admit I have never ventured inside.

They carry 100 wines under $10 and 200 wines under $15--and they do offer discounts on bulk ( which I'm sure we will have)! They also have wine from all over the world! I am very excited for the tasting on Friday, I will definitely keep you informed! Oh I almost forgot to mention, they also would deliver to our reception site which would be perfect!

Coming Soon! Agent Provocateur Bridal Line

This just in: According to British Vogue, Agent Provocateur, the sensuous British based designer lingerie store, is set to debut a Bridal Line in the coming months! The new spokesman for the line will be Kate Moss and if it's anything like their current offerings you can expect an exciting mix of naughty and nice.

If you can't wait until the bridal line debuts then you should check out their current collection for honeymoon outfits. The below Marie Collection is sweet enough for you but sexy enough for husband to be and would make the perfect "first night" gift for both of you. Sure it'll set you back about $500 for the whole set, but you know some brides spend that on their shoes so why not on their lingerie?

I'll keep my ears and eyes open for any news on the debut date of the new line.

The Great Mascara Hunt

I'm not a big makeup person in general (mainly cause I don't know how to put it on very well), but there are two makeup items I'm very picky about. 1) Foundation. I'm super super pale so finding a foundation that matches is really hard (more about this later) 2) Mascara. I like my eyes, and like my lashes so it's a feature I like to play up, but not all mascaras are created equal.

I thought I'd share some of my favorite mascara finds from the past year or so. Mascara is a personal thing and it all depends on what you're looking for (curl? length? thickness? all of the above?). So before I start I'll tell you about my lashes and what I look for in a mascara.

1) I already have a lot of lashes and they are already long so I can't promise that the mascaras I like will work for someone with really short or sparse lashes. I don't really care about curling b/c I never felt like it really made a difference for me.

2) I don't like waterproof mascaras. I feel they are too harsh and I definitely wouldn't wear it everyday. Plus even though they are waterproof they still SMUDGE! Waterproof doesn't mean oil proof.

3) I HATE smudging. I already have dark circles under my eyes so smudging is something that really bugs me cause it makes me look even more tired then usual.

4) I have REALLY sensitive eyes. For some reason I tend to develop allergies to certain brands...even if I've been using them forever, sometimes my eyes will itch, get red, and swell. I regularly replace my mascara and even if I go and buy a brand new tube it doesn't help. So there have been a few times that I've found mascaras I really like only to have to go and find a new brand once my eyes develop an allergy to it.

So with that in mind here is what I liked and why:

1) ^Longcils Boncza Classic Cake Mascara in Noir. I know this French mascara doesn't really look like mascara. That's because it's cake mascara. It's mascara in powder form. You simply wet the brush, rub it into the powder cake and then coat your lashes with the brush. This particular cake mascara was worn by Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn. You need not travel to France to get it, though, you can buy it in the U.S. here.

The Pros: I was really amazed that this actually works! My eye lashes were super soft and totally natural looking. It looks like I was born with naturally dark lashes. This is a great every- day, going to work mascara if you don't want to look like you are caked in makeup. The mascara is all natural (it has beeswax and rosewater in it) and it is the one mascara that NEVER bothers my eyes. Because it's in a powder form it doesn't breed bacteria like tube mascaras so you don't have to replace it as often. It's also very easy to remove at night. Wear this to give your lashes "a rest" from your normal routine.

The Cons: It takes *slightly* longer to apply in the mornings then just your normal tube and swipe mascara. If you want super dramatic lashes or you are use to heavy makeup then this is too subtle for you. It was great to wear during the winter, it has withstood the tear test as well, but now that humid days are back it definitely smudges by the end of the day. I'll probably wear this mostly during the non-humid months.

2)^ Blinc Kiss Me Mascara - This was the first "tube" mascara I ever tried and I loved it! Instead of painting your lashes it forms little black tubes around them.

Pros: Because there is no painting involved there is no smudging, smearing, or running. The only way to remove this is with warm water and gentle pressure (i just use cetaphil face cleanser and a wash cloth and have had no problems). It's pretty gentle on your eyes. Sometimes I have slight irritation but for the most part it's non-irritating. It has withstood the tear test. No smudging either!

Cons: I still have some irritation even though it's minimal. It's a good everyday mascara but once again it isn't SUPER dramatic. Probably not the best for special occasions.

3)^Imju Fiberwig - Similar to tube mascaras, Fiberwig forms a film around your lashes instead of painting them. Unlike Kiss Me mascara, however, it coats your eyes with fine micro fibers to give your lashes more length and thickness.

Pros: Provides a much more dramatic look then Blinc Kiss Me. This is a good mascara for everyday and for going out. When I first wore it Fiance said "your lashes look really long." And another friend I hadn't seen in a while commented on how long my lashes looked. It's easy to remove (cetaphil and a wash cloth). It has withstood the tear test and NO SMUDGING.

Cons: The biggest Con for me is that even though there isn't smudging, there is FLAKING. By the end of the day I always have few specs of black under my eyes from the mascara falling off my lashes. It's nothing major and way better then smudging, but still kind of annoying. This mascara is also slightly irritating to my eyes if I've worn it for a while.

4^Kevyn Aucoin "The Mascara"-Curling - Kevyn Aucoin based this mascara off of Japanese mascaras like Fiberwig. It's another type of "tubing" mascara but as it dries it "shrink-wraps" around your eyelashes to make them curl.

The Pros: Definitely the most dramatic lashes of all the other mascaras I've mentioned. You will definitely have super dark and long lashes. Easy to remove (cetaphil/washcloth). It has withstood the tear test and there is No Smudging! I've also gotten compliments with this mascara on how long my lashes look. It flakes much much less then Fiberwig.

The Cons: I've never really noticed that it makes my lashes curl anymore then any other mascara. Some flaking but less then Fiberwig. Even though this flakes less the Fiberwig it can also be REALLY clumpy. You HAVE to wipe it with a tissue or along the rim before you apply or your lashes will stick together and be clump city. This kind of annoys me. This does irritate my eyes after I've worn it all day.

5^Giorgio Arman Maestro Mascara - This is just a normal mascara but it has a really unique brush. The brush actually looks a little scary. It's not soft and fluffy like other mascara brushes...it's a hard wand with rigid teeth. I know this sounds horrible but it doesn't hurt and it's pretty easy to apply.

Pros: Hands down this is for SUPER DRAMATIC lashes. I've never really noticed if mascaras are "thickening" or not but THIS is thickening. I already have a lot of long lashes but with this mascara I felt almost like I was wearing fake lashes they were so dramatic. This is for a special night out or if you are use to having diva makeup on.

Cons: I only had a one day sample of this so I really can't speak to whether or not it will withstand the tear test. I can say, though, that it didn't smudge (even after a day on an airplane). It does irritate my eyes after a day of wear.

6) P.S. Two mascaras that often get raves that I just didn't really "get" are 1- Maybelline Great Lash Mascara- I know it's the best selling mascara in the U.S. but it seemed clumpy and smudgy to me. I just don't understand the popularity. And 2 - Dior Show Mascara - I know it gets rave reviews and everyone loves it, but I just didn't see what was so special. My lashes weren't any longer, darker, or thicker then with any other mascara. What am I missing about this, why is it so popular?

So what's your favorite mascara? Got any recs for me to test drive? Remember I like non-irritating, non-smudging and preferably water resistant but not a "waterproof" mascara.

Weddings for Wine Lovers

Who says you have to live in Cali to have an amazing wine themed wedding reception? D.C. has several highly rated wine bars that take you straight to Napa, most with private dining rooms. Here are some cool options if you're having around 50 guests. Mr. Shirlington and I are looking into having a second local reception for our friends who can't make it all the way down to Florida for the real deal. Yay for a second chance to wear my dress!

Dino Restaurant

At Dino, D.C.'s top rated wine bar according to City Search, you can serve your guests authentic family style Italian food starting at only $37 per person! The only catch is that their private dining room only holds 20 people with a minimum expenditure of $1900. To rent the entire second floor, which seats 60, the minimum is $3000 Sunday through Thursday and $5000 on Friday. Please note that the upstairs cannot be rented out on Saturdays.

That may seem steep but if you count in the cost of alcohol and food, it's average for the area as far as a per person cost, but adds up to great savings since there's no room rental fee.

Tallula

Lounge
Dining Room
Tallula is rated number 2 on City Search's top wine bars in DC. It's actually located in the Arlington area. With an interesting menu including sunchoke soup (MMmmmMmm) and vidalia onion ravioli, it's sure to be memorable for all your guests. The hor douvres also sound fab! Think baby burgers with truffle oil and seabass ceviche....

Lounge: The maximum capacity for this room is 50 people, and there's no room rental fee. This room is best for reception style parties featuring passed hour douvres. The minimum for the space is $750 and it can be used from 4p.m. to 9 p.m. Perfect for a reception and then an after party at your favorite D.C. club or bar.

The Wine Room:
This area is better suited for seated dinners for up to 18 people with a $500 minimum, and again, no room rental fee.

Sonoma

This is actually one of mine and Mr. Shirlington's favorite Capitol Hill spots. He threw me a surprise birthday party there knowing how much I love the "wine on tap" and exposed brick walls.

The Avenue Lounge: Shown in the photo above, the avenue lounge is the second level of Sonoma and can fit up to 125 guests for a cocktail reception. It also has a third level mezzanine which overlooks the fireplace area.

The Wine Room: This room has a private bar and can accommodate a seated dinner for up to 40 people and a cocktail reception for up to 60.

This is the place to go if you're really looking to serve alcohol. Beer and wine service is $12.50 per person per hour, well open bar is $15 per person per hour and premium open bar comes in at a whopping $20!!! per person! per hour!! Stationed appetizers are $5-$7.50 per person per hour, and you can choose four+ to be served. Lunch buffet prices start at $47 per person and dinner prices are not listed. However, there's still no room rental fee.

Beer and wine for 60 people for three hours: $2500
Buffet style dinner (I guessed around $50 per person) for 60 people: $3000

It still comes in around $80 per person, which is around average for D.C. and with no room rental fee for that amazing loungey space it's quite a deal.

Is anyone else thinking of having a not-so-traditional reception?

Honeymooning Outside of the Box

Have I mentioned that Fiance and I aren't taking a honeymoon? Yeah well we aren't. We're at a critical change point in our job (we work in the same place) and taking time off is not an option and won't be for a while. We'll eventually take some sort of trip but at a certain point I don't think it's considered a honeymoon anymore.

But before you cry me a river I should let you know that Fiance and I basically travel for a living so sometimes it feels like staying home is more of a vacation. There are many places we haven't been but we've already done a lot of the typical and even not so typical honeymoon spots.

Paris? Been there. Caribbean? Done that. Mexico? Si. Rome? Florence? Venice? Check. Check. and another Check. The Pyramids? Yeah them too. Tokyo? Yep.

A lot of times people ask me out of all my travels what place did I like the most? What was the most impressive? Where would I return? Where do I recommend? All those typical honeymoon spots have their place...and really if you haven't been you should go, but to tell you the truth none of them have been my favorite. So what's my top pick? Are you ready?

It's Jordan.

Yep.

Jordan.

That's right, I said Jordan.

And here's why:

1) The Dead Sea - The lowest place on earth is shared between Jordan and Israel. It's the most beautiful color of blue and yes because of the high salt content you literally float from the moment you enter. You don't have to do a thing you just naturally float. It's a very surreal experience. The Dead Sea is surrounded by a number of luxury hotels and spas. If you want the relaxed, pampered, sitting by the infinity pool experience then this is it.

2) Wadi Rum - This dry desert valley has some amazing and breathtaking scenery. Huge granite and sandstone mountains appear out of middle of nowhere and narrow canyons hide ancient drawings. If you're into hiking, rock-climbing and sleeping beneath the stars in the Bedouin nomad fashion this is your place. Some Bedouin actually still live here so you will more then likely come across them during your trek.

3) Petra - Petra is a place you must see before you die. Really. I'm not joking. It's a World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Petra was even mentioned in the Dead Sea Scrolls so you know it's gotta be good ;) But don't go for one day...give yourself at least 3 or more. Petra is an ancient city carved completely out of "rose red" stone and the colors really are breathtaking. You can spend days hiking through Petra and discovering amazing old sites.

4) Aqaba - Lying at the tip of the Red Sea, Aqaba is one of the top scuba diving locales in the world. If you're into scuba, snorkeling, windsurfing, or lounging in luxury hotels then head to Aqaba.

5) Cause You Like Movies - Remember the final scenes of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade when he discovers the Holy Grail? Yeah that was in Petra (note-the Holy Grail has nothing to do with the history of Petra). You know how Lawrence of Arabia won a lot of Oscars including one for cinematography? Yeah that was Wadi Rum....and Sir Lawrence was on his was to Aqaba.

6) Cause you like History or you like Religion - Want to stand in the same spot where Moses looked onto the Promised Land? Want to put your hand in the same water where Jesus was baptized? Get thee to Jordan

7) Cause it's easy - Jordan is a small country. You could easily drive from one end to the other in half a day. That means that you can see all these amazing things in two weeks or less and really feel like you've gotten to know the country and without feeling like you're constantly traveling. Plus the country has a great system of roads...nice highways throughout. Many people in Jordan speak English...especially around the popular tourist sites. I'd make an effort to learn niceties in Arabic but don't be intimidated by the language.

8) Cause you shouldn't be afraid - I know that a lot of people hear "Middle East" and freak out. I know that a lot of people would never travel to that region out of fear, but the reality is Jordan is one of the most calm and stable countries in the region. Jordanians are friendly and welcoming. Sure they don't like our countries politics but really who does?? Hospitality is one of the most revered Arab customs and most people will treat you incredibly well. You're much more likely to get mugged in London then you are to be bothered by anyone in Jordan. Crime is virtually nonexistent.
Yes, you'll see women in veils but you will also see young girls in jeans and makeup. Throughout the country you'll see a mix of modern and traditional and that's just part of what makes it fascinating.

I know many of you will never have a chance to make it to Jordan but I hope I've encouraged you to get adventuresome with your honeymoon locale.

Below are some of my own pics from Petra-

^That's me!

^If you click this pic to enlarge you may notice a white little spec towards the bottom center of the pic....that's me too!! Petra is amazing!

^This is probably the most you'll get to see of me and Fiance until the wedding.

My Personal Best

My Bride's Year Ahead planner says that a bride should strive to look and feel her personal best on her wedding day. As you may remember, I started working out with a trainer a few weeks ago thinking that I would look perfect if I dropped a few pounds through healthy diet and excercise. I've done pretty well and am on the road to looking hot...

Until the fateful morning 10 days ago when I realized over the past year I've developed some major...wrinkles. It's been a very stressfull and personally difficult year, so I'm absolutely not surprised. My diet was lacking healthy foods in a mojor way and I can't say I made an effort to drink lots of water or even sleep more than 6 hours each night. I've never used wrinkle cream and I've been using clearasil cleanser since 6th grade.

But, still, imagine my dismay when I woke up, stared in the mirror, and realized the little bit of eyemakeup I missed washing my face the night before had settled into a series of deep, long and ugly wrinkles under my eyes. Not pretty.

So here's what I got to remedy this problem to reach my "personal best."

N.V. Perricone Nutritive Cleanser with DMAE: $35
N.V. Perricone ADVANCED Eye Therapy: $95
Loreal Wrinkle Decrease: $20
It hasn't even been 2 weeks, but I have to say, I've seen a huge change in my skin. I've been using all products according to the directions, using the eye therapy under and around the eyes and focusing the wrinkle decrease on my forehead and around my mouth. I've not seen results yet as far as fewer wrinkles, but my skin is so much brighter and clearer.

I'll update you on the improvements after 8 weeks! How are you guys getting to your personal best?

He can't come home until after April 21st cause he's still just a baby but he'll be here soon. Most of you probably think getting a puppy a month before your wedding is bad timing...and you're probably right but this is something I've waited a long time for (he's my reward for a hard year last year).

In the mean time if you have any suggestions on anything related to puppies or Dachshunds in particular I'm all ears (good books, good trainers in the D.C. area, good vets in the area, any products you love for your pet, food recommendations, advice in general etc.)

Yay! Now I have something to obsessively research besides weddings :)

Save the Date Postcards

I didn't want to put the time into a save the date, but when you're having a wedding of only 75, there are bound to be a few people expecting to be invited who are not. A Save the Date would only start the problems, allowing those uninvited to confront me as to why "they didn't receive their save the date." But I'm going to have to face the scrutiny sooner or later, save the date or no save the date.

And who really made me decide to do them was my sweet grandfather who will be hosting a little gathering at his house after the wedding. On several occasions he said to me, "Are you going to send out one of those Save THAT Date things? Because, I tell you what, those things were so helpful in making travel plans for the other weddings we've been to."

So Mr. Shirlington and I decided to use this novel idea from Martha Stewart Weddings. How cute would this be using a Destin beach postcard?

Then we realized all the Destin postcards were outdated and lacked the bit of elegance we were looking for. So we found a photo we loved of the Destin beach and then had fmil work her magic on it to make it ours! (The real one obviously has our names on it!)We ordered 100 of these from Overnight Prints, and plan to use the extras to put in the out of town bags (pre-stamped) for people to send us messages on!

Next, we ordered 100 3 in. x 3in. envelopes to tape to the back from Jam Papers.

And last, I slaved for hours to design the perfect card for the inside. It may not be as cute as Martha's, but it has all the information anyone could need to plan travel and lodging in advance so as to get a great deal on airfare, etc. And as you will see in the near future, it sets the tone for our other paper-related projects!

Design Idea from Martha: Priceless
Postcards: $45 (including shipping. Google "overnight prints discount codes" and get a good deal!)
Envelopes: $21 (including shipping)
Stamp/filligree design: $4.50 (Paper Source)
Luxe Cream Paper: $15 (Paper Source)

Total cost: $85.50 for 60 Save the Dates (and 40 extra postcards).

Mrs. Bowie is SUCH a Rock Star!!

Just finished watching Mrs. Bowie's episode of Who's Wedding Is It Anyway!! Whoo Hoo!! Again I was really pleased at the portrayal of the day. It's so interesting to see what they come up with after shooting so much footage. You never know what will make the show and what will end up either on the Bloopers episode or the cutting room floor. Mr. and Mrs. Bowie's love story rang true. Everyone needs to be sure to catch the episode tonight on the Style Network at 10:00pm. Yea for another great DC wedding, yea for the shout out to the DC Nearlyweds and "Whew" from your favorite DC wedding planners at holy matrimony. Kudo's to Rissa and Nathaniel at Balance Photography and Ashley at Up Do's for I Do's. Stay tuned though the season's not over yet, we've got more episodes to debut.

The Bowies' official "15 minutes of fame"

So if you missed it, it's okay. It'll be on again tonight at 10PM on the Style Network and then nearly every day for at lesat the next week. What am I talking about? That would be the premiere episode of "Whose Wedding is it Anyway?" aired of our wedding this morning at 6AM.

I could have announced this early showing before it happened but, honestly, nobody (except for us and some of our family) really would actually wake up that early to see it. Also, it was the first time that we would be seeing our show and we kind of wanted to experience it as much before everyone else as possible to prepare ourselves for later during "prime time" when the new weekly episode is more widely known to air.

First off, I'm pleased enough with how it was edited. It could have worse but it really could have been better, too. There was a lot that wasn't shown (more of Mr. Bowie's family, the welcome dinner at Dave & Buster's, etc.) that could have made it a lot more fun and memorable the way we remember it and it was mostly centered around my side of the family - unfair, I think. They also DEFINITELY look a very fair share of dramatic license to edit it in such a way that put the "blame" (if you will) on certain elements and aspects and individuals that I don't feel was entirely warranted. But that's television for you, right? I knew that would happen before I even saw it.

One thing I can't and won't complain about? I did not come across and was not edited to be the "hormonal" and "difficult" pregnant bride. Of course, I didn't give them much to work with in the way of making me out that way but still, it would have been an easy angle for them to take. Additionally, I don't feel like I looked as bad as I could have looked - in terms of feeling like I would look "big." And finally, I feel like, as far as Mr. Bowie and I are concerned, they definitely let the way we feel about each other really outshine a lot of the seemingly challenging things that happened and existed.

Sundonia and Jerome (the couple before us with Mrs. Nearlywed who were on the show) commented that, in retrospect, they would reconsider being on the show to have had the intimacy back of their wedding that they had to give up to have all of the television cameras there. For us? Certainly, at times, it was weird having cameras there and being hooked up to microphones but - I don't feel like we sacrificed very much of anything in the long run. Granted, we will have to live down the scrutiny of others who see the episode (make their own judgments of things that were and were not aired) BUT(!) we both really feel like we had the wedding of our dreams despite everything else. For us, happiness is a matter of choice and so we choose to look at the brighter side of things instead.

Wedded Wisdom, Part 1

I've asked my sister-in-law to share a little advice on how she stayed on budget and still pulled off a gorgeous wedding! She's an avid DCNearlyweds reader who lives in Atlanta. We see so many weddings with crazy budgets that look amazing, so I wanted to share a beautiful real wedding successfully executed on a real budget. Keep in mind that James and Leslie hosted almost 140 people.
click photo to enlarge
***
When my sister-in-law, Miss Shirlington, asked me to share some of the money-saving and DIY tips I picked up while planning my August 2007 nuptials, I was more than happy to oblige. I so thoroughly enjoyed the process that I truly wish I could do it again!

I had an average budget and number of guests for my Northeastern Ohio wedding, but I've also been known throughout my life for having champagne taste on a chardonnay budget. Even so, with careful spending and a little extra time, I still had everything I wanted without going over my limit. The key is remembering the appropriate time to apply that money-saving attitude based on your goals for the day. Awesome deal on centerpieces? Great! Awesome deal on my cousin's mother's sister's aunt the photographer? Not so much.

Here are some pointers on items that not only saved money, but were fun projects that created memorable details of the day.

The Do-It-Yourselfer

Whether you're into it or not, we all can admit that scrapbooks not only pretty, but a much better way to look back at your shower, bachelorette party or wedding than sorting through a stack of photos. At both of my showers, there was a table of papers, scissors, stickers and embellishments, and everyone who came was asked to make one page. They left personalized notes and advice, and we took a photo of me with each guest. All you have to do is print the photos, glue them in, and voila! Instant scrapbook!

I don't have a picture because, well, it's still not done.

For a guestbook, I made a small scrapbook with one matted photo of James and I on each page. It was a nostalgic item that showed us throughout our relationship, and it was a great read after the wedding. Additionally, our friends and family enjoyed leaving us notes sharing their memories about the photos.

The Bargain Hunter

I paid extra attention to holiday sales, especially decoration-heavy celebrations such as Christmas, and other special-events. Unfortunately, the time of year your wedding is in and how much time you have to plan can sometimes determine how effective this strategy is. You may not have planned on clipping coupons for your wedding, but I found that it was worth my time. Ask your mom, FMIL, sister, MOH, etc. save you the coupons, too. Using e-mail and circular deals from stores such as Jo-Anne's and Michaels equaled 40 to 50 percent off all my invitation kits, bubbles, pew-bow holders, guest book, scrapbook, centerpiece beads and veil pattern and supplies.

Centerpieces & other reception table decoration:

Chargers: $25 for 20 gold chargers on after-Christmas clearance; Kirklands Home

Candles: $150 for 20 each of six, eight and 10-inch ivory, unscented candles on after-Christmas clearance; Pier 1 Imports

Beads: $25 for 5 bags using coupons; Michaels

I also visited two Ohio-based wholesale craft stores, The Flower Factory and Pat Catan's. If you don't know where to find one of these in your area, ask teachers, artists or crafty people for advice. They have an immense supply of nearly everything , be it for weddings or not. Make sure you have a good idea of what items cost at other craft and decorating stores, though, as not everything is a deal. These stores are where I purchased my aisle runner, memory candle and holder, tulle ribbon for pew bows, cake topper and ribbon for programs and place cards.

Mirrored Initial Cake Toppers: $10; Pat Catan's

*****

More to come on Leslie's Invitations, reception cards & response cards, Programs, Place cards, and Veil in the next post!

Shoess...

FI and I went to his house in Ohio this past weekend, to visit the family. His sister just had a baby ( on top of our already adorable 14 month old nephew) , the new baby is adorable and so sweet, she already has her aunts heart, that's for sure :)

Anyways, while we were at his house future MIL showed me her dress she will be wearing to the wedding ( gorgeous!!) and she also showed me shoes that she is wearing for the rehearsal dinner...and I LOVED them. Loved them, as in I wanted to find them in the right color and wear them for the wedding! I am not that much shorter than FI only about 3 1/2 inches, so I knew I didn't want a tall heel ( I also fall when I wear tall heels, I am not balanced :) ) But I have been having a hard time finding cute "in between shoes" and than my future MIL did it for me!

They are Stuart Weitzmans, and they are gorgeous in person--Here they are in
white :

and here in Ivory ( what I would get) :

^ These pictures don't even do them justice, they are so cute and comfy on--definitely something that could be worn all night! My only hesitation is that I thought it might be cute to wear red shoes as an "accent" color--and these don't come in red--what do you think?

The First Dance

As I mentioned in a previous post, Fiance and I have been taking group dance lessons for a while now. Not for our first dance song, but just in general so that we feel more comfortable on the dance floor in any situation (not just for our wedding). We've completed all of Ballroom Dance I and most of Ballroom Dance II, but last Thursday we began private lessons for our first dance.

We don't want to do anything fancy...none of those elaborate dance routines that you see posted on YouTube. We just wanted to be able to do more then the high school sway.

So now that's we've begun, I thought I'd share our choice of first dance song. We didn't have an "our song," and there really is no major story behind our choice other then it's a song we've both always liked, it's not a very common first dance song, the lyrics are nice, and it's a fun song.

So without further ado here it is:

Now you may have noticed that the song has a pretty fast beat. We've started practicing a single swing for the song, but if it ends up being too fast for us to be comfortable we have a back-up...this awesome (and much slower) remake by Lily Allen:

And just in case you were wondering about the lyrics, here they are:

Don't get me wrong
If I'm looking kind of dazzled
I see neon lights
Whenever you walk by

Don't get me wrong
If you say "Hello" and I take a ride
Upon a sea where the mystic moon
Is playing havoc with the tide
Don't get me wrong

Don't get me wrong
If I'm acting so distracted
I'm thinking about the fireworks
That go off when you smile

Don't get me wrong
If I split like light refracted
I'm only off to wander
Across a moonlit mile

Once in awhile
Two people meet
Seemingly for no reason
They just pass on the street
Suddenly thunder, shower everywhere
Who can explain the thunder and rain
But there's something in the air

Don't get me wrong
If I come and go like fashion
I might be great tomorrow
But hopeless yesterday

Don't get me wrong
If I fall in the "mode of passion"
It might be unbelievable
But let's not say "so long"
It might just be fantastic
Don't get me wrong

Anybody else chose an uncommon first dance song? What about one that wasn't a "slow song"?

Introducing...Miss Georgetown

Hi everyone. I'd like to introduce myself. I'm Miss Georgetown and an August 2nd bride. (Only 118 days to go!) Why Miss Georgetown?...because both FI and I are Georgetown grads and we are actually getting married at the chapel on campus at school! We are really, really excited about it.

I started working with Mrs. Nearlywed to plan my Georgetown Wedding last year when I moved to NYC. Planning from a far can be very challenging, but Mrs. Nearlywed has been amazingly helpful. I was a bride-to-be who thought everything was in-place before I hired a planner. I had a date, a church and a reception site. To my surprise, two months ago I realized that I contracted a space that was too small for my reception! Mrs. Nearlywed to the rescue...and I was able to find a much better space for my reception. I'm super excited about the space (I just saw it for the first time yesterday), so I thought I'd share it with you. http://www.belmontconferencecenter.com/ The staff is super helpful and nice and if you don't mind a trip to Howard County, it's a great place for your wedding and/or reception.

Your Big Fat Foolish Wedding

A column I occasionally read in the Washington Post is Michelle Singletary's "The Color Of Money." The Color of Money is a personal finance advice column and like many financial advisers in the public eye she gives pretty hard hitting advice about taking care of your obligations before your desires.

Last month she had a column entitled Your Big Fat Foolish Wedding. The basic gist of the article is "don't go into debt for a party" and if that means cutting your giant guest list or going for the CostCo cake then so be it.

Since Michelle is pretty hardhitting she gave a checklist of things you need to have before you can really justify spending a lot of money on a wedding. She says if you can't check each of these boxes then you need to rethink your reception/honeymoon plans . Here it is below....how many of these boxes can you check?

1) You have three to six months of living expenses saved up

2) You have a life-happens fund. This fund is used for everyday expenses, such as car repairs.

3) You both are saving for retirement.

4) Neither of you has credit card or student loan debt.

5) If you have children, there are college funds for each in place.

To be perfectly honest I can't check all those boxes. Both Fiance and I still have student loans and while we do have rainy day funds I'm not sure it adds up to six months worth.
That being said...even though my wedding is in the so-called "average" price range of a D.C. wedding I'm happy we aren't going into debt to have it even though we are paying for it ourselves.

I think the comments on her article are also pretty interesting. The only thing I dislike about some of the comments, though, is the implication that the cost of a wedding has anything to do with how long a marriage lasts.

People love to say "oh I went to this lavish wedding and now they are divorced" or "we had our wedding on a farm and I picked my own bouquet from a field of wild flowers and we've been married 35 yrs." The reality is that lavish doesn't mean you aren't made for each other and modest doesn't mean you're destined to be together forever. And vice versa.

So can you check all those boxes? Does that change your thoughts on how much you are spending for your reception?

What Should Guests Throw At Me?

The wedding coordinator for our site recently asked us if we were going to have any type of "send away" at the end of the night and if we were what we'd be doing for it. Well if you remember, Fiance and I are having our reception at a historic Inn and we'll be staying at the Inn that night so we won't actually be doing the going away thing. They said they could stage a mock one but that just sounded stupid to me...what would we do just turn around and walk back in?

Then they suggested we have a going away when we leave from the church to the reception and have everyone line up as we go to our car. But since we're taking some pics after the service that means everyone would have to wait on us and then someone would have to gather them while we wait and that once again just seemed a little staged and fake to me.

But I really do like the idea of the "send away" so I needed to find some way to incorporate it. I decided I would have the "send away" as we were walking down the church aisle right after we said our vows. But then comes the question..."what should guests throw at me?" Despite the fact that our church is really old and could be easily damaged they are actually incredibly lenient about this type of stuff so my options were wide open. But I had some rules of my own

1) Sparklers were out. Flammable...indoors...historic church...sun doesn't set till an hour after the ceremony anyway....just wouldn't work.

2) I hate loud noises. For reasons I won't go into, I really can't handle the sound of anything around me popping, banging, exploding or making any type of similar sound. I don't want to be scared on my wedding day. And for other reasons, I can't think of anything worse then the sound of a bunch of bells all ringing at the same time. I want to cover my ears just thinking of it.

3) Nothing minuscule. I can't even imagine what a nightmare cleaning up rice, birdseed, rose petals or confetti would be for the poor janitor that would have to clean up after our wedding. That would be wrong of me and I'm not a selfish enough bride to put someone through that. Outdoors is one thing but indoors would be a nightmare.

4) No poor unsuspecting animal should be used for my personal amusement. No doves, No butterflies.

So that didn't leave many options. I could have done bubbles but I heard they can stain your dress and I was worried about any damage it may do to the carpet/pew seats inside the church.

Well you know the other day when I mentioned that I was looking for something completely unrelated when I found the Favors You Keep website? That thing I was looking for was streamer throws . What are streamer throws you ask? Just see below

^Credit to Innovative Photography

Streamer throws are (surprise!) streamers! I know you're asking yourself "wait a sec...aren't streamers messy?"

Well the great thing about streamer throws is that the thin streamers stay attached to a plastic capsule that you can loop around your hand. So once the streamers unravel you can just gather up all the capsules for super easy clean up. I really like the idea because they will probably make for some good pictures, people still get to throw stuff at me, they won't damage our church, and it'll be easy to clean up afterwards. The only problem is the streamer throws aren't sold in many places.

I found them at Favors You Keep and ordered their 3 capsule sample pack. Each sample pack comes with 1 white paper streamer capsule, 1 colored paper streamer capsule, and 1 silver mylar streamer capsule. Ordering was easy and shipping was lightening fast. Below is what I found when I opened the box

^The capsules are very tiny. I put an 80z water bottle next to them for comparison. The white pipe cleaner loop at the top is what you slide your hand through. You then rip off the paper bottom.

^Once you rip off the paper bottom you can see the mini streamers all rolled up in little balls. This is the colored paper streamer capsule.

^With your capsule open you then aim the streamers at your target and throw just like you were throwing a ball. The paper streamers unravel in the air and hopefully onto your victim.

^Once they have fallen you can see that the streamers are still attached to the capsule around my hand, instead of scattered all over the floor.

^All you have to do after that is gather the capsules and throw away. Easy Peasy.

What I learned from my 3 sample pack was 1) I wanted to order the streamer throws for my wedding 2) The mylar streamers unravel a lot quicker/easier/better then the paper. Some of the paper streamers didn't unroll quick enough. So get mylar 3) I liked the multi-color more then the uni-color streamers.

We decided to order enough so that the kids at the wedding could all have one and the person at the end of each row. We figured one for every person would be overkill and a waste as not everyone will want to partake. We ordered 20 overall.

Unfortunately, Favors You Keep only had silver or gold mylar streamers....not the multicolor like I wanted. So I did a little bit more research and found AeroTechnic.com, they had the throws in multi color mylar so I ordered from them.

The streamer throws from AeroTechnic came in the other day and they are pretty much the same, but I believe the ones from Favors You Keep are a higher quality. The plastic on the throws from AeroTechnic looked a little worn and not as clear as the ones from Favors You Keep and the paper bottoms are taped down unliked the ones from Favors You Keep. But AeroTechnic had the colors I wanted and they allow you to order how ever many you need, whereas with Favors You Keep you are locked into ordering boxes of 24 at a time.

Overall I've been very happy with my experience with both companies. And I'm excited to see how it ends up looking! What do you want your guests to throw at you?

DIY Table Runners

I blogged several times about the right shade of eggplant for my table linens and which options were most cost effective. In the end, I decided that even the most luxurious linens I had found weren't even the exact color I wanted. So that's when I hit up G Street fabrics for some DIY options. I ended up finding several fabrics that I loved, but the one I brought home with me was this plum silk shantung backing.

Anyway, I also purchased a bit of HeatnBond Lite Iron on adhesive for hemming the edges. It worked like an absolute charm, and with the help of Mr. Shirlington's amazing measuring skills, this is what we ended up with! (Check out the color variations in the photos from this exact same piece of fabric!! What's up with purples not photographing well?It makes me so angry!)

The photo above represents the true color of the fabric.

And this one looks like circus purple. Either way, the guests will see plum, not this photo. But the point is, this was a super easy project and I'm so proud of my first real DIY!!

Total cost per runner: $6
Total time per runner: 3o minutes. 10 minutes to measure and cut, 15 minutes with the iron, and 5 mintues of sheer satisfaction.

The Jewels

Because my dress is lace from top to bottom, I'd like to wear a simpler necklace and intricate earrings. My jewelry will be gold, but I'm having trouble deciding which direction I'd like to go: pearls, crystals, or amethyst to go along with my purple wedding colors.

Here are some beauties I've seen that made the decision much harder.

Carrie D. Mader - This one can be ordered in gold.

Wendy Mink Jewelry- a gorgeous twist on classic pearls

Alexis Bittar: In love with these!

To Gocco or Not to Gocco..

Gocco--Something that months ago meant nothing, is now a part of my everyday vocabulary, especially right now while I am plagued with the question "to gocco or not to gocco". As I have previously posted ( and I'm sure I will post more of) FI and I are planning on making our own invitations/menus/place cards...etc. Even though I have been "anti" gocco before, I felt with the new set of projects, perhaps it was time to revisit the "gocco". So revisit it I have, I have been reading websites/reviews checking out different places that have Gocco material, the works. All in all I do like what I see, but my main question is, how is this different than printing with a printer? I have never seen a "gocco project" when it's finished, and I'm a little hesitant before spending about $200 in supplies! If anybody out there has Goccod or is familiar with the finished product I would love it if you could tell me pros/cons! I hear that it makes the invitations look more professional, which is definitely a plus, but I am honestly A little confused of what the finished product looks like in person, so I would appreciate it if fellow brides to be, past brides or just crafty people can let me know if they think its worth it! THANK YOU :)
