You have the ring on....now it won't come off!!
As a nearlywed with a ring that is just about a size too big, there has been much discussion about what size to get it cut down to. Its a 3 3/4 (that's what I was originally measured for) and its huge! Nola of Doubet Jewelers in Wilmington, DE (where we got the ring) recommends cutting it down to an even size 3. My concern is what to do on days that my fingers swell?? (which often happens due to humidity.) Her comment was "Well you just won't take it off that day!" Of course, I panicked, thinking what if my finger swells so much that it gets stuck and for some reason I need to take it off - like I want to work out, garden, etc. She had a great tip for this - Windex!! So, in doing a little research about what to do when a ring gets stuck, I found this great post in Wiki-How. They offer many ideas including window cleaner, dental floss, cooking shortening, among others. Have this problem too? I sort of have this problem as well. My ring is an antique that's been in the family for awhile. It techinically fits, but I have trouble getting it over the "meaty" part of my finger right below the knuckle sometimes.
I haven't had it sized because the band already thin from being old and I know that one day I will HAVE to have it worked on, so I figure I can stick it out for now.
I definitely notice when my hands swell, typically when I'm exercising or I'm dehydrated. Most of the time I have no trouble with it though. And I never worry about losing it because it can't fall off!
I would go for having it sized down!
Oh, sorry forgot my solution! When we were in the mountains skiing my hands would swell because of the altitude and dehydration. Running cold water over my hand under cold water always worked. And I could always get it off when I was washing my hair at night (with the shampoo and water).
why not just have them install two small gold balls at the bottom of the ring. That way if your finger swells- it swells around the balls but you can still get it off. Also if you get pregnant- you don't really want to be without your ring for 6 months, do you? this way the balls can be removed and it will fit for that time.
I don't know- it was our solution to a slightly bigger ring. If we cut mine down it would have disrupted the integrity.
due to my poor circulation, my hands (and feet) swell and shrink all the time, and quite a bit! i was worried when i got my ring sized in the winter at a 4 1/2 that it would be too tight in the summer. it does get pretty tight when hot and humid out, but i'm still able to just get it off. in the AC, though, i walk around with my hand closed - i'm afraid it'll fall off!
if you're worried about the integrity of the setting, or that your hands will change size someday, i'd say go with the little balls on the inside of the band. they can always be removed without affecting the setting.
My hands often swell, so for our first anniversary my husband got me a eternity band in a bigger size to wear then. I can pretty much predict when I will swell, or catch it early on to get the rings off before it gets bad. I like having an alternative, and I didn't have to compromise the look of my e-ring and original band.
I have used the Misto spray can that you put EVOO in to get my ring off a time or two.
