why Hello Cupcake
I have a lot of catching up to do! Hopefully I'm not the only one done under by the work+life+wedding combination. But I promise I'll slowly but surely share all the details that have been coming together for the big day, which is in just under four months (yikes).
I'll start off with the most recent development. I first read about Hello Cupcake in a Chowhound thread--it caught my eye because the store is set to open around the corner from my office in Dupont Circle. THEN I got excited from seeing all the cute flavors on the website. Anyhow, it is a gourmet cupcake shop run by Penny Karas, featuring all-natural, baked-from-scratch cupcakes made with fresh and local ingredients. The website is up, but the store isn't set to open till July 9th. Cupcake shops have certainly become all the rage, starting with Magnolia up in NYC and Georgetown Cupcake and cakelove here in the D.C. area. Frankly, I think Magnolia and cakelove are way overrated and I've yet to try Gtown Cupcake.
Back to the point. So I exchanged a couple emails and phone calls with Penny to get some details about her Bespoke Cupcakes and she offered to bake a few different flavors for me and FI to try. ( I didn't want to wait till the store opened to lock down this detail) So I stopped by her home after work yesterday to pick up some freshly baked cupcakes to taste. Feast your eyes on these:

PMS-ers everywhere, be jealous. There's one missing because I was halfway through eating it before I even thought to take a picture. That also explains the crappy pic, since I was holding said half-eaten cupcake in the other hand. Bottom pic, clockwise from the left: Red velvet w/ cream cheese frosting, 24 Carrot, Raspberry Beret, Peanut Butter Blossom, Heart of Darkness and Triple Coconut.
I am happy to report that they are as delicious as they look! They are unbelievably moist and there's just the right amount of frosting on each one--not tooth-achingly sweet either. Plus the frosting is light and flavorful without that dense, I'm-going-to-roll-down-the-aisle feeling. FI, his roommate and myself had a sugarfest last night trying bites of each one. (I went back for seconds of the PB Blossom and Triple Coconut.)
We unanimously agreed to go with cupcakes instead of a wedding cake for our 2nd reception. There's another idea I'm excited about but I'll have to wait till it's actually executed to share it with y'all. But check out Penny and Hello Cupcake! Penny won't be filling any orders for the next few weeks to concentrate on getting the store open, but feel free to shoot her an email. She also says there'll be many more seasonal, etc flavors available once the store opens. I have a feeling my co-workers and I will be frequent visitors...

I would love to see how you display the little cakes.
I'm also going with cupcakes.
(attempting to make them myself)
but I still want them to look fancy, weddingish, and not like a kids party.
